GUDVANGEN   to  KAUPANGER

We took a long ferry ride from Gudvangen to Kaupanger on Nærøyfjord.  It is a branch of the Sognefjord and the narrowest fjord in Norway at 18 km's [11 miles] long and only [500 metres [1600 ft] wide in some parts.

It is a UNESCO World Heritage site as well as National Geographic natural heritage site.

Our trip was about 2 hours long and the natural beauty we experienced was unbelievable. Despite pushy Chinese and equally pushy and loud Spaniards, we managed to get a nice spot and took literally hundreds of pictures and film clips.  The boat had a p.a. system and they explained the surroundings, gave us information about the geography, pointed out the waterfalls and the villages in 6-7 different languages. Unfortunately our more than rumbustious fellow travelers did not give us a chance to hear what was being said until it got to their respective languages - Chinese and Spanish! Then it was quiet and everyone paid attention.  I got upset and Stephan found it amusing.....

Here are some pictures:

Before we went to Jostedalsbreen Nasjonalpark- Nigardsbreen Glacier and onto Balestrand, we visited the Kaupanger Stave Church.

Built in the 12th century the Kaupanger Stave Church is the largest Stave Church on Sognefjord.  It is still in use today as a parish church.  Situated on a little hill overlooking the fjord it is quite spectacular.
